They appear once a year, emerging blinking into the sunlight, fabulous tribes with a set of rituals and customs adapted for the pleasure of summer living. Discover The Seven Tribes of Summer, revealed exclusively by our Human Wildlife photographers who have captured the lifestyle habits of these Seven Tribes!

Once a year inspired by the spirit of the early Pioneers, and Dad who thinks it would be “great for all the family to have a holiday like we used to”, the Pioneers head out for the wild, armed with only a tent, a pair of extra-thick socks to wear at night, and the original Pioneers’ dream of finding somewhere sheltered to set up the barbie and toast some marshmallows.

At this time year in cities all over the world we see the little known tribe of “Cartographers” emerge. Commonly known as “tourists”, the Cartographer Tribe often listen to a figure known as “Dad” or “Boyfriend”, who will never ask for directions. Because of this, the tribe can be found outside galleries, buildings, historical centres and famous buildings, looking puzzled at oversized maps.

While legend has it that Vampires only come out after sundown, Sunsetters only appear against the backdrop of heavenly sunsets. They essentially live their lives as fabulous icons, as symbols of wonderful summers past, or as a visionary ideal of inner peace and warmth. They can only be seen in the glorious glare of sunsetting over the hills or via rays of light poking through forests. These, mainly young folk, are epic and iconic.

Some Tribes like to spend the summer adding members to their Tribe, August/September are most popular months for giving birth. You’re likely to see baby bumps, nest-making, cocooning and an occasionally exasperated figure called “Mum” who after 8-9 months of keeping new tribe recruit snug and warm, can be heard talking to her belly – “Enough, already! Come on out!”

This hardy, tough, greenfingered Tribe can be seen wearing protective hats, wielding oversize clippers, and offering special prayers to the weather gods - “Where’s the sun Dammit!” They can sometimes be spotted taking sneaky naps in deckchairs. Others in their Tribe like to spend afternoons throwing rugs down, eating food while batting away wasps.

The time of year when a resilient Tribe known as settlers, gather together for an ancient ritual called “queuing”. They come together in sacred places known as “Airports”, “Train Stations”, and “Highways” to wait for hours-on-end, sometimes even days, in the quest to move somewhere else.

A much sought after Tribe this time of year. While in ancient times the hunter-gatherer was much admired, in modern day it’s the Planner, often female, who is particularly desired for her planning skills, packing, organizing, booking holidays and making sure that fellow travellers remember to bring their toothbrush.
